Silk Surrounds

Biophilic Installation Design

Design Statement:

The overall aim for this installation includes bringing awareness to the issues of the production of silk. The issue is one overseen by many people as they believe it being luxurious and expensive makes it good for the environment. The installation incorporates sustainability concepts such as biophilic design principles, bio-inspired design and circular design. This can be seen through the use of re-purposing waste silk for the installation and mimicking the design of the worms nest for the overall design of the exhibition. Also, light and wind helps the audience feel a deeper connection to nature without physically being outside surrounded by nature. The exhibition will be multi sensory where the audience can participate in creating silk rope and add it to the exhibition.

5 ecological aims:

- Bringing awareness to the issue of the production of silk
- Re-purposing old silk for the exhibition - reducing waste in for the overall exhibition
- Bring attention to biomorphic forms and biophilic designs bringing people closer to nature
- To create a multi sensory installation that encourages participation among the audience
- Make the audience reflect on the issue through biophilic design principles.

Biophilic Design

The main patterns of biophilic design used includes: non- visual connection to nature – through lighting and mimicking nature, dynamic diffuse of light - through reflections of the design on the floor from above lighting, Refuge – through the cocoon like shape providing a place of comfort, biomorphic forms and patterns through the overall structure of the exhibition. ‘To create a multi-sensory installation that encourages participation among the audience’ The audience can interact through weaving the material provided through the exhibition walls and lastly ‘Make the audience reflect on the issue through biophilic design principles’ is seen through mimicking silk worm nests for the overall structure as well as their individual strands through weaving my repurposed silk strands and incorporating the patterns of biophilic design the audience is in a space where they are able to reflect on the issue.

Construction Considerations

Silk strands are woven into string. The string has a very tight tension allowing silk strands to stay in place.
